On our way to our long weekend at Yosemite, we spent one night in Mariposa which is about an hours drive away from the park. We arrived around 4pm and checked into our hotel, the Mariposa Lodge (very nice and reasonable). Receptionist said there was a new micro-brewery ‘Prospectors’ and a new wine bar ‘ The Alley’ recently opened. Headed to the brewery and the guy running it was from Los Gatos and he had about 4 different brews including a new barley wine. Then on to Sugar Pine Cafe a great 50’s style diner, for dinner since Savorys, the best place in town was closed for vacation. Turned out dinner was great – short ribs and garlic mash! We struck lucky again for nightlife as there was an all day music festival, Cousin Jack’s, in the indoor fairgrounds just out of town. Held to raise money to buy instruments for school kids. A bargain for $10!
I sat next to an old guy and he was a real character. He left Cupertino in the 1980’s to come up here and pan for gold. He still pans and wins lots of competitions (came 6th in an Italian competition) and told us to come to the Mining Museum on Sunday and he’d give us a tour.
We saw 3 bands and headed back to town for a night cap at the new wine bar. Very friendly owners and both wine and beer on tap – it was busy with regulars so hope it’s there next time we visit.
